Squint (Strabismus) Treatment
A squint is a misalignment of the eyes: one eye may turn inwards, outwards, upwards or downwards while the other looks straight ahead. It can appear in childhood or develop later in adult life, and it affects both vision and confidence.
Assessment
Our orthoptic assessment measures the angle of deviation in every direction of gaze, tests binocular vision and fusion, and checks for any underlying refractive error or amblyopia. Adults presenting with a new squint are also assessed for neurological causes.
Treatment options
- Glasses — some squints, particularly accommodative squint in children, correct with the right prescription alone.
- Orthoptic exercises — strengthen binocular control in convergence insufficiency.
- Prisms — help with double vision in small deviations.
- Squint surgery — adjusts the tension of the eye muscles to realign the eyes.
Squint surgery
Surgery is a day-care procedure performed under general anaesthesia in children and usually under local anaesthesia in adults. It takes around an hour, and most patients go home the same day with a realigned, natural-looking eye position.
