ReLEx SMILE vs LASIK: Which Is Right for You?

Patients often arrive having decided on a procedure before they have been examined. In practice the right choice depends on your corneal thickness, your prescription and how you use your eyes.

The core difference

LASIK creates a hinged corneal flap, lifts it, reshapes the tissue underneath with an excimer laser and lays the flap back down. ReLEx SMILE never makes a flap: a femtosecond laser shapes a lenticule inside the intact cornea and the surgeon removes it through a 2 mm keyhole.

Where SMILE has the advantage

• Less post-operative dry eye, because fewer corneal nerves are cut.
• More corneal biomechanical strength preserved.
• No flap to displace — reassuring for boxers, martial artists and contact-sport players.

Where LASIK has the advantage

• It treats long-sightedness; SMILE currently does not.
• Wavefront and topography-guided customisation is more established.
• Enhancement procedures are simpler if a touch-up is ever needed.

What decides it

Corneal thickness and topography usually settle the question. A free evaluation measures both, screens for keratoconus and assesses your tear film, and only then can anyone tell you honestly which procedure suits your eyes.
