Cataract is a cloudiness or opacity of the eye’s natural clear lens. It obstructs the passage of light to the retina of the eye and impairs vision. When the lens develops cloudiness to the point that it impairs vision, it is called Cataract. It is like looking through a frosted glass.
What Causes Cataract?
The eye functions much like a camera. Light rays enter the eye, passing through the cornea, the aqueous humor – transparent fluid in the front of the eye – and then the pupil and into the lens. The lens bends the light rays to focus objects onto the retina lining the back of the eye. From there, the image passes through the retinal cells, into the optic nerve, and finally to the back of the brain which process the images.
Cataracts occur when there is a buildup of protein in the lens that makes it cloudy. This prevents light from passing clearly through the lens, causing some loss of vision.
Cataract surgery is an exciting time for patients because it offers the unique opportunity to optimize vision by correcting myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia.
During cataract surgery, the cataract is removed and a permanent intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted in its place. The traditional IOL is monofocal in nature, and it provides the sharpest vision at one distance. These IOL’s only correct for myopia and hyperopia. Patients tend to choose to have the clearest vision at distance and then rely on reading glasses to correct for astigmatism and presbyopia post-operatively.
There have been many advances in the development of special intra-ocular lenses that correct for astigmatism and presbyopia in addition to myopia and hyperopia. These advances have allowed patients to strive for spectacle independence. There are a variety of lens options available; it is important to have a frank discussion with your surgeon to assess your visual needs and expectations.
